Aquatic physiotherapy for mobility and balance

What Is Aqua Therapy?

Aqua Therapy uses carefully selected therapeutic movements and exercises performed in water. It is not swimming or an aqua fitness class.

Exercises are selected according to the patient’s condition, mobility, strength, balance, pain, stage of recovery, functional goals and medical precautions.

WHY WATER?

A Different Environment for Rehabilitation

01

Body Support

Buoyancy supports part of the body’s weight and may make selected movements easier.

02

Natural Resistance

Water creates controlled resistance as the body moves through it.

03

Movement Practice

Some movements may be easier to begin or practise in water.

04

Balance & Mobility

The aquatic environment can support selected walking and balance exercises.

Who may be considered?

  • Knee or hip pain
  • Joint stiffness
  • Arthritis-related mobility limitation
  • Accident recovery
  • Fracture rehabilitation
  • Post-operative rehabilitation
  • Back pain
  • Weakness or walking difficulty
  • Senior mobility
  • Selected neurological rehabilitation

Water or Land? Sometimes Both.

Aqua Therapy and conventional physiotherapy are not competing treatments. Water may support movement and reduce effective joint loading, while land-based rehabilitation remains important for weight-bearing strength, stairs, work, sport and everyday independence.

Some patients may benefit from both environments at different stages of recovery.
